Welcome!

We will be using this wiki in order to gain a better idea of how a wiki works.  You will want to read the chapter on Wikis in the Richardson book (that's your "read on" book for technology; the Wordpress book is reference only).

What is a wiki?

In a technical sense, a wiki is an interactive, online space.  In explaining wikis, I like to think about ice-cream (yes, ice-cream)!  Ice-cream is a type of food (a wiki is a type of interactive, online space).  There are many different flavors of ice-cream, such as chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla (there are many different flavors of wikis such as wetpaint, wikispaces and wikia - the wiki "flavor" that hosts wikipedia).

Teachers appreciate wikis for multiple reasons, including:

  1. wikis inspire and support collaborative writing, a necessary skill for most professionals today.
  2. wikis inspire and support collaboration on projects, such as the camping trip example shown here.
  3. wikis save a revision history, making it possible to review the multiple revisions that a page has undergone.  the possibilities for collaborative writing the wiki inspires.
